the dogs are named monty, jimmy and porter. for two months, they trained indoors on how to change gears, to brake, and to steer. finally, the trainers allowed the dogs to get behind the wheel of a real car. and they did it on live tv. with a little bit of help from the humans. the dogs were able to put the car in gear, operate the accelerator and start driving. they can even steer on command. the trainers say they simply created a series of instinctive behaviors for the dogs to learn. but it did take a while, they say, for the dogs to get an idea of what was actually happening. i'm not sure they ever did. but anyway, the project was sponsored by the spca in new zealand. they wanted to prove dogs can do anything. we don't suppose we'll see
